Yes? No? Maybe?

There’s an old police adage that goes: “When citizens are in trouble, they call the police. When the police are in trouble, they call SWAT.” There can be no question of the positive contributions made during the almost 40- year history of the concept of SWAT. From Whitman, at the Texas Tower in the 1960s to the Miami FBI shooting and the ATF incident at Waco, the tactical foundations of SWAT have been paid for with blood.

It's Duty Holster Ready
The issue of magazine capacity probably gets too much attention because we often have to make sacrifices to jam more bullets into a pistol. More bullets mean a bigger grip and move some pistols away from the everyday cop comfort zone. But when you can get a bunch — especially bigger better ones like .45s — into a grip that’s comfortable for an average hand, that’s a good thing. My personal opinion is magazine capacity should never be the deciding factor in anyone’s firearm choice and my standard response when someone says it is to ask, “Are you planning on missing a lot?” At the same time, if you can have more without any real penalty, that’s okay too. And that is what Springfield has done with the XD-45 with a capacity of 13+1.

A Marriage Made In Shooter's Heaven!
It’s no secret I’m a dyed-in-the-wool precision bolt-gun aficionado. So when I was asked to do a story on the Thunder Ranch/Les Baer AR15, it was with some trepidation that I approached the project. After all, how can an AR15 possibly shoot less than a 30" group?

SIG Freezes The Compertition With Its New Guns.
By any yardstick, SIGARMS has been kicking butt in handgun sales to federal law-enforcement agencies. It’d be fair to say they’re dominating that market. The first in a series of recent contract victories was announced in August of 2004. Homeland Security’s Office of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) awarded SIG a five-year contract for up to 65,000 pistols which includes the P226 and P229 Rail pistols with the new DAK trigger system in 9mm and .40 S&W. The P239 pistol is also part of the contract in double action only (DAO) configuration. The contract is the plum of recent federal handgun procurements and is valued at a cool 23.7 million dollars.

Four Attacks That Can Kill You.
But First, A Stupid Scenario:
The young street tough’s eyes squinted in the near darkness of the alley. “You’re dead meat, pig,” he snarled as he pulled a Tijuana switchblade from his pocket and snapped it open sharply. Sweat rolled down the forehead of Officer Dirk Steele as he came to a stop. After chasing the young tough for over three blocks and using every round of ammo he had, Steele simply dropped his Glock to the ground. Reaching down to his boot he pulled his “backup knife” out and up into a ready position. Their eyes locked in a stone embrace. The battle was about to begin. Sound familiar? In a B-movie, maybe, but never in real life.

Simple Is Better.
After a couple stints in the field as a patrol cop and then as a sergeant, I found one universal truth could be applied to darn near any aspect of my daily duties — Simple is Better. That applied to the preliminary reports cobbled out in the field, to directing traffic, making the approach on a possible burglary in progress or planning for a special event. After all, we had the lieutenants, captains and chiefs to come up with the overly complicated grandiose abject failures. Uncomplicated, easy to understand, easy to explain and easy to implement seemed to work so much better for me.
