Let There Be Light — In Lumens And Weight

“The pistol that will never die” continues to live a life of its own, as it keeps ahead of the rest of the pack while approaching a century of service. With more companies than you might care to count making Model of 1911-style pistols, even more variations and improvements have been made to the gun — many more.

Ancient Weapon Or Modern Tool?
It’s been seven months since you’ve slept on a mattress and three months since you’ve had a warm bath. It’s cold now and getting colder every day. You’re packed up and ready to head south, possibly all the way to Fort St. Louis, to fetch the best price for the furs. It was a good year, the best in the last three, and the cold journey from the Northern Minnesota territory is long but holds great reward.
Then tragedy strikes — your only horse slips on the loose, muddy hillside trail and breaks a front leg. Suddenly, the decision you made to stay two weeks longer, to linger for just a few more muskrat pelts, could mean the difference between life and death. Your journey south is no longer for rewards — it’s for survival.

The Triple Threat
It’s no secret I’m a dyed-in-the-wool precision bolt-gun aficionado. So when I was asked to do a story on the Thunder Ranch/Les Baer AR15, it was with some trepidation that I approached the project. After all, how can an AR15 possibly shoot less than a 30" group?

Les Baer And The 1911 Pistol
Generally speaking I’m not a 1911 guy. This may be blasphemous to some, but there’re a few things in a defensive handgun I just don’t feel I get out of most 1911s. At the top of the list is reliability. Color me picky, but I want the damn thing to go off every time I pull the trigger. And I mean every time. I’m pretty good at the tap-rack-assess-bang thing when I have to be, but I’d rather just plan on a loud bang each time I squeeze the trigger.

Good-To-Go Gear For The Uniformed Grunts
Yeah, we know: Uniformed patrol ain’t no picnic. The detectives get the fame and photo-ops, strolling into HQ in their pretty soft suits in front of a crowd of reporters and TV cameras, each tugging the elbow of the home-invasion suspect you chased for three blocks, then tackled and brought him down in a back yard covered with more dog-bombs than grass. You came up victorious, but smellin’ like you’d just passed through the bowels of a Saint Bernard. You were told so by your sergeant, who pointed out that you still had three hours left on your shift…Oh, no, it ain’t easy “bein’ blue.”

It Runs As Good As It Looks
The debate on what makes a great backup or off-duty carry gun has gone on for years. It has to be small but not too small. It should be lightweight but still controllable. It must be easy to shoot, allowing you to make solid hits at a reasonable distance. Finally, it should be in a caliber as large as the platform can accommodate. In my early days of working the road, the choices were a small frame revolver such as a Chief’s Special or a .380 Walther such as the PPK/S. Well, times have changed and there’s a new king of the hill.
