SOG’s Single Point Sling

SLING ARMS! A simple drill command; striking fear in the hearts of military veterans everywhere. It engenders flashbacks of screaming DI’s — veins popping out — as they scream encouragement to new recruits. This command also strikes fear in the hearts of cops with complicated multipoint slings, fearing strangulation or looking like a spider’s dinner as they attempt to quickly don their long gun in an emergency. I’ll be first to admit I’ve a couple of complicated slings which initially captured my imagination as a tool to handle all rifle toting situations. In fairness, some are good for certain applications, including carrying long guns for extended periods and while doing a wide range of duties from movement to combat.

Simple Is Better

I’ve come to the conclusion, while working patrol, I want a very simple sling. I need something I can grab and throw on in an instant allowing me an immediate hands free option. In short, I need a SOG single point sling. The SOG “Single Point Sling-Bungie Type,” is about as simple a sling as you can get. It’s a single piece of 1.5" nylon webbing with a length adjustment buckle attached to elastic cords and a quick-release mounting clip for direct attachment to your gun. The elastic cords are covered with nylon webbing protecting them from wear. The quick-release mounting clip is made from steel setting them apart from some other slings using pot metal. And there’s a story behind the steel mounting clips.

Former Green Beret and Vietnam veteran Mark Kinsler is one of the three principal owners of SOG Armory. The other two — another Green Beret and a Navy SEAL — are also Vietnam vets who served within the Special Operations Group. Between the three of them, they spent enough time “in-country” to not only legitimately use the SOG moniker, but to have a bond with their contemporary Special Forces comrades. From what I’ve seen, this bond accompanies a responsibility to provide help and assistance to others as they go in harms way. They even offer a discount to law enforcement and military personnel.

Only Quality Will Do

So, back to the all steel mounting clips. One of SOG Armory’s military contract customers — noted for being particularly punishing on gear — had some breakage of mounting clips on the old version of the sling. SOG had been selling this sling with the old style clips for some time with no problems noted. When the problem was identified, SOG didn’t blame the customer for being too hard on the gear as would some vendors. Mark had all steel mounting clips made for use on all their slings. The mounting clips bear the name “SOG” right on them, so you know you are getting the strongest clip available. Not only did Mark fix the problem with the slings, he went back and replaced all the slings ordered by the customer and didn’t even ask for the old ones back. A company that stands behind it product and makes improvements when problems are pointed out, is a company I want to do business with.

Other Cool Stuff

In addition to the Single Point Sling — Bungie Type, SOG Armory has a full line of quality gear including an extensive line of AR-15/M-16 accessories. From muzzle breaks to stock pads and everything in between — they have your tactical rifle needs covered. They’ve even developed their own new AR-15 and it’s in the final phases of ATF approval. I saw the prototype and it’s an outstanding looking weapon.
